When I was about 3 years old,

my parents drilled into me to "look both ways before crossing the road." I still think this is a good idea and do it every time I cross a road. Evidently someone forgot to tell the moron with a yard sale sign who walked right out in front of my car this morning without looking. Fortunately I missed him by about an inch because hitting him would have put a really nasty dent in my car.
